Get behind your community radio stations

Radio doesn’t stop for anything. It runs 24-hours a day, seven days a week, without fail. It has become clear that not video, nor even the internet, can kill the radio star. But for radio stations that don’t run for profit, these demanding standards are impossible to uphold without community support.

Running costs for just half an hour of airtime alone can be as much as $200. The impact is especially being felt by those community stations trying to expand into the digital realm since the reviewed federal budget revealed a steep shortfall of $1.4 million of desperately needed funding.

With inadequate government backing and limitations in gaining funds through advertising and sponsorship, the community radio sector is under serious threat. As a result, these stations are now relying upon public support more than ever. How can you be involved? The stations each hold a number of events during the year including donor drives and music festivals, raising money to safeguard their survival.

Some of the main community radio stations in Australia include 4ZZZ (QLD), FBi (NSW), Triple R (VIC), RTR (WA), Australia’s oldest community station 2XX (ACT), SYN (VIC), 2ser (NSW), Three D Radio (SA) and PBS (VIC).

But what are you truly fighting for by being involved? Community radio separates itself from the commercial division in that it brings listeners a more diverse range of music, information and news; all the while embracing a local focus and supporting local talent which is largely absent in mainstream radio outlets. They give voice to the smaller communities within society and discuss issues that are relevant and more likely to directly affect listeners.

Most stations host major annual campaigns to gain subscribers to keep the station going, with most also holding a string of other fundraising events at various stages throughout the year to help stabilise their viability.

You don’t have to wait for one of these events to pledge your support! Donations are welcome 365 days a year. Click on the links above to subscribe or make a donation.
