North Fitzroy musician hits the right notes

A year ago Aliyah-Shanti Kenny had never even thought about pursuing music. Now, she is among 12 finalists in the running to win the Melbourne Music Bank Competition.

Performing under the name Selki, the North Fitzroy resident formed her band under two months ago and they have been gigging prolifically ever since to slowly build their sound.

“To win the competition would be amazing exposure and offer a phenomenal opportunity to broadcast my music to Australia,” Selki said.

“Making an album has been a dream of mine for the past few years.”

Spanning a range of genres, each of the 12 finalists have composed original songs drawing inspiration from Melbourne.

The public is encouraged to vote for their favourite artists before 5pm on October 12 to narrow the entrants down to four. After a performance from each of the four semi-finalists, a panel of industry experts will announce the winner at the Melbourne Recital Centre on October 29.

The winner’s prize includes two days of recording at Sing Sing studios, CD printing, the filming of a music video, live gig opportunities, album artwork and marketing advice to help kickstart their music career.
