Kew’s Auntie Ying recognised for community service

Fondly known as ‘Ying Ah Yee’, meaning ‘Auntie Ying’, Kew resident Wu Kiu Ying was among 14 seniors to be recognised for their dedication and contribution to their local communities.

Ying was honoured with a Promotion of Multiculturalism Award for supporting the elderly Chinese community and helping promote cultural diversity.

Ying volunteers at a range of social clubs and cultural groups, and played a key role in the Australian Chinese community’s fund raising response to the 2011 floods in eastern Australia. Friends say she can be found volunteering at a different group every day of the week.

“She is a shining example of an older person maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle through volunteering and as a lady who inspires younger people to follow her example of community participation,” Minister for Ageing David Davis said.

Mr Davis presented Ying with the award at the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards ceremony at Government House on October 2.
