Toorak Library and Toorak Rotary Club are teaming up to hold Stonnington’s first Garage Sale Trail.
Supported by more than 120 councils across Australia, Garage Sale Trail organisers are expecting up to 10,000 garage sales and about 1.5 million second-hand items up for sale on October 25.
Toorak Library development officer Chelsea Hughes said sustainability, recycling and reusing were the motivations behind the event.
“The library will be handpicking items from the full library collection that are in good shape and we’ll set up outside if the weather’s nice,” Ms Hughes said.
“So it will be more special and slightly more visible than our usual book sales. Hopefully we can raise the profile of our regular book sales as well.”
Stonnington mayor Adrian Stubbs encouraged members of the community to get involved or register a sale of their own.
“It offers the community a chance to think about how we engage in responsible reuse, rather than putting items out for the hard waste collection that end up in landfill,” Cr Stubbs said.
About six volunteers will be running the garage sale at Toorak Library on October 25 from 10am until 2pm.
Sale items will range between 50 cents and three dollars, with the final proceeds divided between Toorak Library and the Toorak Rotary Club.
